Turning the Tide: Jobs, Health and Coastal Communities

Coastal communities face a unique set of circumstances. Much loved by residents and visitors alike, many also experience some of the poorest health outcomes in the country.

These inequalities are shaped by a range of factors such as poor transport connectivity and a labour market often reliant on a small number of industries compared to inland neighbours. What’s more, as Professor Chris Whitty highlighted in his report on health in coastal communities, people living on the coast have too often been “overlooked, with limited research on their health and wellbeing”.

In this lunchtime webinar - jointly hosted with the Coastal Navigators Network - we’ll explore the distinctive challenges facing coastal communities, as well as highlighting what can be done about it, by hearing from the pioneering work being led by anchor partners across Clacton in Essex.

In particular we’ll examine the important role that anchor organisations can play as major local employers in helping bring about healthier, more resilient coastal economies and communities.

Who should attend?

This webinar will be particularly relevant for:

  • Anchor organisations working in or with coastal communities, including NHS organisations, local authorities, housing associations, businesses and universities.

  • Leaders and practitioners interested in reducing health inequalities and improving the social and economic conditions that shape health.

  • Economic development, workforce, procurement and community engagement professionals seeking to maximise the local impact of their organisations.

  • Policymakers, researchers and voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations with an interest in coastal health and wellbeing.

By attending, you'll:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities facing coastal communities.

  • Hear examples of promising practice from organisations working to address health and economic inequalities in coastal areas.

  • Explore how anchor approaches can support healthier, more resilient local economies and communities.

  • Connect with others interested in improving outcomes for coastal populations.
